UK police live facial recognition deployment
Overview
The British Transport Police (BTP) conducted a six-month trial of live facial recognition (LFR) technology in London railway stations between February and July 2026. The trial, which cost approximately £320,786, scanned over half a million faces but resulted in no arrests and one false positive identification. Following this phase, the BTP announced a four-month extension to include London Underground stations, reporting three positive confirmed alerts involving individuals subject to court conditions or sexual harm prevention orders.
In Cambridgeshire, police have expanded LFR deployment to Cambridge city centre following previous use in Peterborough. The technology compares live camera feeds against police watchlists of wanted or high-risk offenders. To manage privacy, authorities stated that images of individuals who do not trigger a match are automatically deleted, and images that do trigger an alert are deleted immediately or within 24 hours.
The Metropolitan Police has announced plans to install permanent LFR cameras along Oxford Street as early as December. This deployment, targeting the West End and Soho areas, may utilize fixed infrastructure such as lampposts to scan the approximately 500,000 daily visitors. The Metropolitan Police cited a previous pilot in Croydon, which reportedly contributed to a 10 per cent decrease in crime and 173 arrests, as justification for the rollout. However, the human rights organization Liberty has criticized the move, labeling it “unregulated surveillance technology” and calling for a pause until a legal framework and independent oversight are established.
