UK, France, and Canada implement UK expands West Bank trade bans Bank, Jerusalem, and Golan sanctions

The diplomatic rift between Israel and a coalition of nations over West Bank settlement trade has intensified. The UK, France, Canada, and 11 other nations—including Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden—have announced bans on goods produced in West Bank settlements and Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem to protect the two-state solution. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband characterized certain settlement expansion activities as ‘ethnic cleansing’ and described the situation as a ‘moral emergency,’ specifically targeting what he termed ‘settler terrorists.’ In a parliamentary announcement, Miliband stated that the government believes the ‘unlawfulness of the occupation should be reflected in the economic relationship’ with those territories. The UK’s planned import ban, expected to take effect within six to nine months, targets products such as olive oil, dates, and agricultural goods. The sanctions also extend to entities and individuals providing construction, infrastructure, or financing for settlement expansion. The United Kingdom has since expanded its sanctions to include East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. These measures complement existing actions targeting the West Bank and include sanctions against extremist settlers accused of supporting or inciting violence against Palestinians. The UK’s stance on the Golan Heights aligns with UN Security Council Resolution 497, which deems Israel’s annexation of the territory ‘invalid and without international legal effect.’ The British Prime Minister defended the expanded measures, stating that the risk of collapsing a two-state solution ‘should concern us all.’ In response, Israel has launched several retaliatory measures. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned the moves as ‘politicized’ and ‘outrageous lies,’ accusing the UK of ‘blatant interference’ in sovereign affairs. Israel has ordered the closure of the British Consulate General in East Jerusalem, giving the UK 30 days to complete the shutdown. Additionally, Israel has expelled British representatives from the International Gaza Support Center, revoked credentials for officials linked to the Palestinian Authority, and barred 12 British nationals, including elected officials, from entering the country. Israel has also ordered the cessation of British training programs for Palestinian Authority security forces. President Isaac Herzog described the sanctions as a ‘grave miscalculation’ and ‘gross interference’ in Israel’s sovereign affairs. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has further called for the immediate expulsion of the British ambassador, labeling the government ‘antisemitic.’
