UK raw milk cheese import ban

Overview

The United Kingdom’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has implemented a ban on raw milk cheese imports from France and Italy. The restriction is a response to outbreaks of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle, a condition spread by insects such as flies and mosquitoes, which has been identified in France and confirmed in Sardinia, Italy.

The ban targets unpasteurized products, including French varieties like Roquefort, Vacherin, Mimolette, Tomme, and certain artisan Bries. In Italy, the measure affects artisan-produced mozzarella and pecorino, though large-scale products like Parmesan are unaffected as they utilize pasteurized milk.

Cheeses produced before May 23rd are exempt if importers provide necessary documentation. Shortages of specific aged cheeses are expected to occur as existing stocks are depleted.
