UK-Turkey trade and FTA negotiations security cooperation
Trade between the United Kingdom and Turkey has reached approximately $37.6 billion, marking a 4 percent annual increase. This economic growth follows the signing of a strategic partnership framework in April and a security and military cooperation agreement in July. Negotiations for a new, broader Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are currently underway, with the sixth round held in London. While a previous agreement focused primarily on goods, the new negotiations aim to expand into services, digital trade, telecommunications, and intellectual property. Following a fifth round in Ankara in June 2026, officials reported that 11 chapters had been closed. Current discussions have moved into technical areas including market access for agricultural products, rules of origin, and investment regulations, while also accounting for Turkey’s Customs Union relationship with the European Union. As of October 2026, Turkey’s Ambassador to London, Osman Koray Ertaş, reported that bilateral trade has exceeded $30 billion, consisting of $24 billion in goods and $10 billion in services. The UK currently serves as Turkey’s second-largest export market, having recorded a trade surplus of $9.5 billion last year. Efforts continue to expand the scope of the ongoing FTA negotiations. In mid-October 2026, the two nations furthered their diplomatic ties through the 7th Strategic Security Partnership Meeting and the 4th Migration Dialogue Meeting in Ankara. Building on the July 2026 security and defense partnership, officials focused on combating transnational crimes, including terrorism financing, organized crime, smuggling, cybercrime, and money laundering. The migration talks addressed the links between irregular migration and cross-border crimes, emphasizing that effective management requires comprehensive international cooperation beyond simple border controls.
