Rubio and Miliband meet in Washington on Europe, Ukraine security

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband met at the State Department in Washington on 5 August 2026. The two officials said Europe must assume a larger role in its own security and highlighted the close trans‑Atlantic partnership.

They discussed the war in Ukraine, noting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s renewed appeal for additional air‑defence missiles as Russia escalates its attacks. Both reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to stand with Kyiv for as long as needed.

The meeting also covered the safety of commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and a joint pledge that Iran will never develop or acquire nuclear weapons. Miliband said he would raise the opening of the strait to ease Britain’s cost‑of‑living crisis and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

During the press conference Miliband avoided answering reporters’ questions about his 2016 remarks calling former U.S. President Donald Trump an “idiot, a racist and a misogynist.”
