UK water company environmental and regulatory issues
Overview
South West Water was fined £7,867,733 at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court for environmental offences committed in Devon and Cornwall between 2015 and 2021. The company pleaded guilty to 18 charges, including 17 counts of illegal water discharge. District Judge Joanna Matson described the pollution as “horrendous” and cited “reckless failures” in management. The offences included hundreds of illegal spills near Bodmin and discharges onto Harlyn Beach.
Further investigations revealed that UK water and wastewater companies earned over £340 million last year by discharging industrial and commercial wastewater into sewage treatment plants. Research suggests up to 608 billion litres of industrial wastewater enter these facilities annually from sources such as hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and food factories. Because many treatment plants use biological systems not designed for industrial chemicals, pollutants are often released into the environment as ‘treated wastewater’ or remain in sewage sludge used for fertilizer. The current regulatory framework in England allows water companies to self-regulate through ‘industrial wastewater discharge consents’ without independent oversight or a central monitoring register.
