The number of young people in the UK aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET) has fluctuated around the one million mark. Initially, reports indicated that the NEET population exceeded one million, sparking debate over whether previous curriculum reforms or economic factors like mental health claims and employment costs were to blame. By mid-2026, data from the Office for National Statistics showed the figure had fallen to 981,000 for the April to June period.
