Overview
A 14-year-old in Nottinghamshire received a three-year youth rehabilitation order after pleading guilty to several offenses committed at age 13. These included racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon, and recording information useful to persons engaged in terrorism.
The criminal damage involved spray-painting a swastika, a racial slur, and a reference to the Christchurch attacker on a victim’s garden fence. The victim described the incident as a “personal attack” that left her “shocked, scared and in floods of tears.”
While police discovered a knuckle duster at the boy’s home and a TikTok video discussing explosive ingredients, experts determined the video lacked detailed instructions for constructing an improvised explosive device. Judge Paul Goldspring characterized the graffiti as “frankly disgusting” but noted the teenager acted to fit in with peers rather than from a fixed terrorist ideology, citing his susceptibility to harmful online influences.
