Ukraine is enhancing its air defense capabilities through both domestic technological deployment and international military aid. The military has begun utilizing the Lima electronic warfare suppression system, operated by the Night Watch unit, to intercept Russian aerial threats. This system can operate at distances of nearly 200 kilometers to disrupt the guidance of drones, guided bombs, and missiles, including redirecting high-speed munitions like missiles. In one instance, the system emitted false navigation signals to redirect a Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile. missile, causing it to break apart due to the stress of its own velocity. While electronic warfare does not replace traditional interceptor systems, it provides a cost-effective layer of defense as domestic production scales up. In addition to electronic warfare, Ukraine has integrated Finnish ItO 90M short-range surface-to-air missile systems into its network network. These systems, identified within the 1039th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, utilize VT-1 missiles capable of Mach 3.5 speeds to defend against aircraft counter drones and cruise missiles. To further bolster defenses, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry Despite these advancements, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed reported a mechanism for the immediate transfer critical shortage of Patriot air defense interceptor missiles. He noted that Ukraine received only 24 missiles from international stockpiles in exchange for future deliveries. Efforts are also underway to accelerate the arrival United States over the last 90 days, a figure significantly lower than the estimated monthly requirement of approximately 350 interceptors needed to defend against ballistic missile attacks. Efforts continue to secure additional Swedish IRIS-T missiles, man-portable air defense systems, and Gripen fighter jets.
