Ukraine observes its Independence Day, commemorating the August 24, 1991, adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Verkhovna Rada. This event restored national sovereignty and severed ties with the Soviet Union. As the country enters its fifth year of full-scale war, observances emphasize national symbols and regional solidarity. Marking the 35th anniversary of independence, high-level diplomatic exchanges took place in Kyiv. Moldovan President Maia Sandu and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy exchanged state honors; Zelenskyy awarded Sandu the Order of Princess Olga (1st Class) for her support of Ukraine's sovereignty, while Sandu conferred Moldova's highest distinction, the Order of the Republic, upon Zelenskyy. Sandu, participating in a meeting of the ‘Will Coalition,’ advocated for strengthened Ukrainian air defenses, noting that a secure Ukrainian sky protects Moldovan airspace, stating, “It is hard to imagine a free Moldova without a free Ukraine.” During these celebrations, the European Commission approved a 6.1 billion euro disbursement to fund urgent military needs, including ammunition, radars, and air defense systems. This funding is part of a larger 90 billion euro Ukraine Support Adaptation Loan (UASL). (UASL) projected to reach up to 90 billion euros between 2026 and 2027. European Council President António Costa visited Kyiv, describing recent Russian attacks on civilians as a sign of desperation and reiterating that EU integration is a central pillar of long-term security. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials at the UN have called for intensified sanctions against the Russian arms industry to curb the invasion.
