Ukraine is preparing to begin training for its pilots on French Rafale fighter jets in France. This initiative follows a discussion between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron regarding defense modernization. Under a long-term defense agreement, Ukraine has established an initial order for 16 Rafale aircraft and related armaments, with four aircraft scheduled for transfer once pilots and mechanics complete their training. The broader strategy involves the potential acquisition of up to 100 aircraft over the next decade, though long-term financing for the full fleet is still being discussed. French Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin announced that pilot training is scheduled to begin this November, following a roadmap established in July 2026. The training program will follow a progressive structure, utilizing trainer aircraft such as the Dornier Alpha Jet and Grob G-120TP to master flight dynamics and tactical maneuvers before transitioning to the advanced Rafale systems. The first Rafale units are expected to be operational in Ukrainian airspace by 2028 or 2029. Defense cooperation has expanded to include the licensed domestic production of French munitions in Ukraine, specifically AASM Hammer glide bombs and SCALP cruise missiles. Additionally, France and Ukraine are coordinating on air-defense systems, including the SAMP/T NG.
