Overview

In July 2026 the United Nations reported a 37 % rise in civilian deaths in Ukraine for the first half of the year, a trend that continued into August. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission recorded a large‑scale night attack on the Kyiv region on 4‑5 August, killing at least 17 civilians and wounding 55, and noted that long‑range weapons were increasingly used against densely populated areas. Cumulative data for the first half of 2026 show 1,396 civilians killed and 7,978 injured, a 37 % increase over 2025 and a 114 % rise compared with the previous year. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree expanding the armed forces by 25,000 personnel, raising total strength above 1.5 million. Russian air‑defence forces reported shooting down dozens of guided bombs, HIMARS rockets and drones in recent days.
