In July 2026 a Polish politician, Stanowski, publicly disputed allegations that a Ukrainian woman was responsible for legalising migrants, highlighting political friction over the presence of Ukrainians in Poland. By early August 2026, official figures showed that 1.55 million Ukrainian citizens held valid residence documents in Poland, accounting for 78 % of all foreign residents. Most were under temporary protection, creating pressure on schools, housing, health care and social services. A Euro‑poll revealed mixed public sentiment on Ukraine’s EU accession, with roughly half of Poles opposing full membership, underscoring the demographic significance of the Ukrainian community and the political challenges it poses. Later in August, MP Włodzimierz Skalik alleged that some Ukrainians were obtaining multiple PESEL numbers by using different transliterations of their names, allowing them to claim several social benefits, and criticised the interior minister for failing to curb the practice. Labour‑market data for December 2022‑December 2025 show foreign workers in Poland rose by 145 000 while employed Polish citizens fell by 215 000, a trend driven by demographic decline rather than displacement. Ukrainians remain the largest foreign‑worker group, but firms are increasingly hiring staff from Asian and South‑American countries as the Ukrainian labour pool contracts. A new poll found 49 % of Poles oppose Ukraine’s EU accession and 42 % support it, mirroring EU‑wide figures (49 % in favour, 39 % against) and confirming Poland as one of the most sceptical member states. Eurostat projects that a person who turned 15 in Poland in 2025 will stay in the labour market for an average of 36 years, slightly below the EU average of 37.5 years.
