The joint UK‑Thai UK–Thai enforcement drive has intensified throughout 2026. In early June, the NCA and Thai customs introduced a fine of 30,000 baht (≈ £680) per kilogram of cannabis seized, with the average haul of 26 kg translating to a penalty of roughly £17,600; offenders may be detained in Thailand until the fine is paid or face up to two years’ imprisonment. High‑profile High-profile convictions have followed, including influencer Ellie Crampsie (16 months), Robin Wild (three years) and two London men each sentenced to two years for moving nearly £1 million of product. UK Border Force has issued a five‑point five-point advisory aimed at 18‑31‑year‑old 18–31-year-old travellers, warning against “free‑holiday” “free-holiday” scams on TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat and reminding that cannabis remains illegal in the UK. Penalties in Britain can reach 14 years’ jail, and seizures hit a record 28 tonnes in 2025. Thailand’s June amendment now imposes up to ten years’ prison and fines of up to 500,000 baht for any cannabis found in airport luggage, regardless of quantity or medical use, and is enforced with X‑ray X-ray scanners and canine units. The crackdown’s human impact was illustrated in July when 45‑year‑old 45-year-old Amy Jayne Durban was caught at Heathrow with 51 kg of Thai cannabis worth about £512,000, pleaded guilty, and was remanded pending sentencing. In August, Durban pleaded guilty to Class B drug smuggling at Isleworth Crown Court and remains in custody pending sentencing in October. Further enforcement saw 34-year-old Zane Jamahl Hutton-Lewis sentenced to twelve months in prison for attempting to smuggle 43.8 kg of cannabis, valued at approximately £430,000, from Thailand to Scotland. The drugs were intercepted by Border Force at Glasgow Airport. These cases reflect a surge in activity; arrests rose from 142 in 2023 to 801 in 2024, with approximately 600 detentions recorded in the first half of 2026.
