The annual Umhlanga Reed Dance has commenced at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence in Eswatini, bringing together thousands of maidens, known as Imbali, for the national cultural event. As the ceremony progresses, participants have engaged in traditions such as cutting reeds at Mpisi Farm and Masundvwini to be delivered to the monarchs. The proceedings include a courtesy call to the Indlovukazi and a commissioning by King Mswati III at the Ngabezweni Royal Residence. To ensure inclusivity, Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla held a farewell for Imbali living with disabilities. King Mswati III has emphasized the importance of safety, discipline, and mutual respect during the event. Under current arrangements, senior Imbali are traveling to Mpisi Farm to cut reeds, while younger maidens proceed to Masundvwini. The participants, dressed in traditional regalia, perform cultural rites intended to celebrate national identity, unity, and heritage. By the third day of the ceremony, Princess Sakhizwe, the Imbali Regiment Leader, officially commenced the reed-cutting activity at Mpisi Farm by cutting the first reed. During the exercise, she emphasized the importance of cultural preservation and encouraged participants to view the gathering as an opportunity for personal development and economic contribution. She also called for responsible media and social media coverage of the festivities. In a new development, the Eswatini Nazarene Health Institution (ENHI) has sent an Imbali Regiment to participate for the first time since its establishment. While engaging in cultural traditions, the ENHI is also providing on-the-ground medical support to assist participants and ensure the wellbeing of the large crowds. Authorities have warned that those found exploiting or abusing maidens could face arrest and charges under the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Act, noting that the legal age of consent is 18. ~~The event is also expected to provide an economic boost to local businesses in the Lobamba area.~~
