United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres traveled to Cairo to advocate for regional de-escalation in the Middle East. His mission focused on preventing the expansion of war, protecting civilians, and reviving diplomatic pathways to peace. During meetings with Egyptian leadership and the Arab League, Guterres addressed the situations in Gaza, Sudan, and Libya, while also seeking to contain tensions between the United States and Iran. He emphasized the necessity of respecting international law, ensuring freedom of navigation, and implementing a two-state solution to resolve the Palestinian issue. Following a three-day official visit to Egypt, Guterres called for the immediate suspension of Israeli restrictions on aid and the removal of obstacles to implementing the UN Security Council’s Comprehensive Plan for an End to the Conflict in Gaza. He also stressed the strategic importance of maritime security, urging the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Bab el-Mandeb and the Strait of Hormuz. In discussions with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy, the scope of diplomatic concerns expanded to include the situations in Lebanon and Syria. Fahmy reiterated support for UNRWA and emphasized the importance of preserving the unity of occupied Palestinian territories while warning against violations of state sovereignty throughout the region. Discussions also highlighted the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
