The UN Human Rights Council has taken steps to extend extended monitoring and investigative mandates for several high-conflict regions. During its 63rd regular session in Geneva, the Council voted to prolong the mandate of the special rapporteur on rights violations in Russia for one year, citing a “continued significant deterioration” of rights including the crackdown on civil society and independent media. In a 21-5 vote, the resolution for Russia—presented by Ireland on behalf of the European Union—highlighted concerns regarding extrajudicial killings, the erosion of political pluralism, and the systematic crackdown on minorities. The Council urged Moscow to grant the monitor, Mariana Katzarova, “full, free and unhindered access.” Additionally, the Council renewed the mandate of its independent fact-finding mission in Sudan for another year. This mission is responsible for gathering evidence of alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian law occurring during the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The session concluded with the adoption of 34 resolutions, which also addressed issues such as transitional justice, migration, and the risks associated with artificial intelligence, including disinformation and deepfakes.
