The United Nations has released reports documenting systematic human rights violations against Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Initial reports from the UN Human Rights Office focused on the mistreatment of Palestinians attempting to return to Gaza via the Kerem Abu Salem crossing. Testimonies collected between July 7 and August 4, 2026, detailed physical abuse, threats, and the confiscation of essential items such as medication, identification, educational credentials, and cash. In one July instance, 54 out of 92 returnees reported their belongings were seized. The reports also highlighted gender-based mistreatment, including women being forced to undress during searches while being filmed by security cameras, and the separation of minors from their families. Subsequent findings from a UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry, titled ‘The Essence of Childhood Has Been Destroyed,’ expanded the scope to include crimes against Palestinian children. The 100-page report documents direct killings, torture, and sexual and gender-based violence by Israeli security forces, alongside the destruction of schools and civilian infrastructure. Commission chair Srinivasan Muralidhar stated that by targeting children, Israel is “attacking the capacity of the Palestinian people to exist.” Further UN reporting indicates a worsening humanitarian crisis. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that airstrikes in Gaza damaged three UN warehouses in Deir al-Balah. Additionally, a UNICEF study found that chronic malnutrition, or stunting, affects 12.2% of Palestinian children under five in Gaza. The study revealed that only 22.4% of children aged 6 to 23 months receive a minimum acceptable diet. Recent updates also highlight civilian deaths resulting from clashes and raids in the West Bank, specifically within the Nablus governorate and East Jerusalem.
