United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has undertaken a series of diplomatic visits to Asia to address global challenges. In Pakistan, Guterres engaged in discussions regarding climate change, geopolitics, and artificial intelligence. He highlighted the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis on the nation and commended Pakistan’s contributions to international peacekeeping and its role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. Following this, Guterres arrived in Indonesia for an official visit from October 17 to 19, 2026. He was received at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport by Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir and other high-ranking officials. During his stay, Guterres met with President Prabowo Subianto at the presidential residence in Hambalang, West Java. Their bilateral discussions focused on reforming the multilateral system, addressing the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and progress toward the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Guterres expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s commitment to multilateralism, its leadership in climate action, and its contributions to UN peacekeeping operations. During these discussions, Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir emphasized the “urgent need for UN reform” to ensure the organization remains representative of the current multipolar geopolitical reality, specifically regarding the composition of the UN Security Council. As Guterres prepares to conclude his tenure as UN Secretary-General at the end of 2026, he used the visit to bid farewell to President Prabowo. His itinerary also included delivering a speech at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs titled “Eight Decades of the United Nations: What’s Next?” and visiting the Indonesian National Armed Forces’ Peacekeeping Center (PMPP TNI) in Bogor to honor fallen peacekeepers and meet personnel preparing for deployment to the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
