The election to succeed António Guterres by December 31 faces potential deadlock due to deep divisions within the Security Council. Among the eight active candidates is former Senegalese President Macky Sall. His candidacy faces active opposition from the ‘Non à Macky Sall’ platform, which is mobilizing to influence consultations. Despite reports of discouraging votes, Sall remains in the race, as no candidate is officially eliminated until the Security Council formally recommends a name to the General Assembly. To succeed, a candidate must secure at least nine votes from the fifteen-member Security Council without triggering a veto from any of the five permanent members.
