UN Sustainable Development Goals implementation status
Overview
Efforts to meet the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda face significant hurdles as the deadline approaches. While some progress has been noted in areas such as digitalization and renewable energy, global crises have slowed overall momentum toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Specific challenges persist regarding universal access to safe water and sanitation (SDG 6). As of 2022, approximately 43% of the global population lacked access to safely managed sanitation, a gap linked to significant health and economic consequences, including diarrheal diseases and losses in national GDP.
To address implementation gaps, economist Bjorn Lomborg and a group of over 100 economists have proposed 12 high-impact, low-cost solutions. These recommendations focus on areas such as combating tuberculosis, malaria, and malnutrition, as well as improving education and trade. It is estimated that an annual investment of $35 billion in these sectors could save 4.2 million lives per year and generate $1.1 trillion for the world’s poorest populations.
