UN warns of human trafficking for online fraud

On July 28 2026 the United Nations highlighted a rapid increase in human trafficking that underpins large‑scale online fraud operations. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimated that roughly 300,000 people worldwide are forced to work in such scam centres, with victims drawn from Africa, South Asia and elsewhere. Traffickers use deceptive job offers to lure migrants, then imprison, monitor and compel them to commit fraud, often subjecting them to abuse and extortion. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime warned that the economic damage from these operations in East and South Asia, Australia and New Zealand could reach $114 billion.

Later the same day, the IOM warned of a dramatic surge in trafficking specifically to scam compounds in Southeast Asia. Facilities in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos now employ up to 300,000 workers, recruiting English‑speaking, college‑educated individuals from more than 80 countries. Victims report violence, sexual abuse, debt bondage and isolation. While Thailand has begun to identify such sites, the agency called for broader regional action, survivor protection, safe return and reintegration.
