In a separate neurobiological advancement, UNAM researchers demonstrated that diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) can reliably detect nerve fiber degeneration in complex brain regions where fibers intersect. Using patients with asymmetric glaucoma as a model, the team successfully used dMRI and tractography to distinguish axonal degeneration in the optic chiasm, potentially improving the diagnosis of diseases involving neuronal disconnection.
