The UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s emergency session in Busan in mid‑July 2026 continued to address heritage at risk in the Israel‑Hezbollah and Israel‑Palestine conflicts. After Tyre was placed on the Danger list on 22 July, the committee on 25 July formally inscribed the archaeological town of Sebastia in the occupied West Bank and five medieval forts in Lebanon’s Mount Amel region on both the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger. The decision cited Israel’s plan to expropriate roughly 180–200 ha around Sebastia for a proposed Shomron National Park, which Palestinian officials warned would curtail tourism and olive‑grove livelihoods. Lebanese authorities and the Palestinian delegation welcomed the protection; Israel protested, calling the nominations a “political weaponisation” of cultural heritage and noting some castles’ alleged military use. A follow‑up statement on 27 July reaffirmed the dual listing and also added the historic city of Tyre to the Danger list, underscoring list. Israel again denounced the committee’s continued listings as political manoeuvring, while Palestinian officials praised the move, saying UNESCO status could halt the seizure of about 180 hectares around Sebastia. Deputy mayor Nizar Kayed expressed hope the designation would help preserve the ancient city, and UNESCO stressed the emergency measures. inscriptions were justified by the ongoing regional conflicts.
