Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf inscribed on UNESCO List

Entities: Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf · Maria Böhmer · Berlin · UNESCO · Bruno Taut

Overview

In mid‑July 2026 Berlin’s Papageiensiedlung (Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf) was submitted as an extension of the “Settlements of Berlin Modernism” World Heritage site. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee met in Busan, South Korea, reviewing the German nomination alongside more than 30 others. Berlin building senator Christian Gaebler highlighted the estate’s Bauhaus architecture, its scale as the largest Berlin modernist settlement, and its underground shopping street at the Onkel‑Toms‑Hütte U‑station. A pilot geothermal heat‑pump project underscored the tension between preservation and climate‑friendly upgrades.

On 24 July the Committee voted to expand the existing “Siedlungen der Berliner Moderne” listing to include the Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf, a 1926‑1932 enclave designed by Bruno Taut, Hugo Häring and Otto Rudolf Salvisberg. German UNESCO representatives Maria Böhmer and Kerstin Pürschel emphasized its ongoing relevance to affordable, healthy housing and the New Building principles of “light, air and sun.” The estate comprises 1,917 dwellings, including 809 single‑family homes, and is noted for its colourful façades and integration of forest landscape and urban infrastructure.

The inscription raises Germany’s UNESCO roster to 55 sites and affirms the Waldsiedlung’s landmark status within the World Heritage framework.
