United Airlines has announced what it describes as the largest international network expansion in its history, scheduled to begin in early 2027. The strategy involves launching 10 new international destinations and adding three routes to existing service areas across Asia and Europe. Key new destinations include Okinawa, Japan; Ljubljana, Slovenia; and several European locations such as Toulouse, France; Luxembourg; Marseille, France; Ibiza, Spain; Valencia, Spain; and Terceira, Portugal. The airline will also add service to Olbia and Catania in Italy. Many of these routes are notable for being the only nonstop service offered by a U.S. carrier to those specific cities. To support these long-haul services, particularly transatlantic routes, the airline will introduce the Airbus A321XLR narrowbody aircraft. This aircraft features a premium-focused cabin configuration, including Polaris business class suites, and is designed to make previously unviable long-haul routes more efficient. United CEO Scott Kirby stated that the strategy aims to differentiate the brand by connecting travelers to secondary markets and less congested destinations. Specific route details include new service from San Francisco to Okinawa, Japan, and expanded connections from Los Angeles to Osaka, Washington D.C. to Milan, and Denver to Paris. The airline also plans to resume service from San Francisco to Tel Aviv. In Italy, the expansion includes restoring a direct connection between Malpensa Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport after twenty years, alongside a new direct route from Catania Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport, utilizing Boeing 767 aircraft. As part of the strengthening of its transatlantic network from Italy, United has announced a new seasonal direct flight service between Milan Malpensa (MXP) and Washington Dulles (IAD), scheduled to begin on May 29, 2027, pending regulatory approval.
