United Naga Council economic blockade in Manipur

Overview

The United Naga Council (UNC) initiated an indefinite economic blockade in Manipur targeting several major National Highways, including NH-2, NH-202, NH-37, and NH-102A. The protest was organized to demand justice and accountability regarding the May 13 incident in Leilon Vaiphei, where six Naga civilians were allegedly abducted, killed, and mutilated. The UNC also called for the removal of Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen.

While the blockade caused significant disruptions to commerce and led to fuel and essential goods shortages, the UNC stated that vehicles providing essential services, such as medical supplies and telecommunications, would be exempt.

After four months of disruption, the UNC announced the end of the blockade following a tripartite meeting in Guwahati involving the UNC, the Government of India, and the Manipur state government. The agreement reached at the BSF Guwahati Frontier Headquarters led to the suspension of the blockade.
