The United Nations has released significant humanitarian funding to address various global crises. Initially, the UN allocated $160 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support 12 countries and regions, including Afghanistan, Sudan, and Yemen. This funding included $10 million specifically for people with disabilities. UN Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher noted that while the funds are critical, diplomatic action is required to overcome access barriers affecting 11 million people. Following this, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced a $75 million allocation specifically for Haiti via the Haiti Humanitarian Fund. This aid aims to assist approximately 507,000 people facing gang violence, displacement, and service collapse. The funding supports food, water, healthcare, and protection services, with a focus on local partnerships and coalitions led by women to reach areas where armed violence limits international access. This $75 million allocation will support ten projects across 28 priority communes in the Ouest, Centre, and Artibonite departments. A portion of the funds, including $4.5 million for a rapid response mechanism, will be directed to Haitian national and local NGOs operating in areas where gang violence restricts international access. In a related development, the UN Security Council has renewed sanctions against Haiti for one year, including asset freezes, travel bans, and an arms embargo, while extending the mandate of the Expert Group overseeing these measures for thirteen months.
