As the 2026 season approached, University of Maine head coach Jordan Stevens emphasized the importance of a veteran offensive line to help the Black Bears achieve their first winning record since 2021. The team aimed to build on previous rushing production with returning players like Rashawn Marshall and Nick Laughlin. Following the season opener, the team held a 1-1 record after suffering a 55-3 loss to Appalachian State, described as the program’s most lopsided defeat since 1995. In response to offensive struggles and turnovers during that game, coaching staff and team leaders focused on improving fundamentals such as blocking, tackling, and ball security ahead of their home opener against Merrimack. However, the Black Bears fell to 1-2 following a 23-14 loss to the Merrimack Warriors at Alfond Stadium. While the defense forced three first-half turnovers, the offense was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities from deep within Merrimack territory. The team recorded only 199 total yards, including 53 rushing yards on 31 carries. Quarterback Eddie Buehler completed 12 of 25 passes for 130 yards and threw two interceptions. Coach Stevens criticized the team’s execution, labeling consecutive fumbles at the 1-yard line as ‘unacceptable.’
