University of Maryland club tennis racism scandal

Overview

The University of Maryland indefinitely suspended its club tennis program after racist imagery was discovered in tournament materials. The graphics, which included symbols resembling Ku Klux Klan hoods integrated into a representation of the Maryland state flag, were included in electronic documents sent to various regional clubs, including Howard University.

University officials described the imagery as ‘awful and unacceptable’ and issued apologies to the affected teams. As a result of the incident, the club tennis team was required to forfeit its matches during the fall tournament, and the university’s Recreation and Wellness department announced a new policy requiring staff approval for all external communications from club sports. The matter was referred to the University of Maryland Police Department and the Office of Student Conduct for investigation.

Following the suspension, students organized protests during President Darryll Pines’ State of Campus address. Groups including the Black Student Union, GetFree UMD Pod, and the Nyumburu Cultural Center demanded the identification and expulsion of those responsible for the distribution of the materials.
