University of Oregon Hillel targeting

Overview

The University of Oregon has experienced a series of incidents targeting the Oregon Hillel organization and its leadership.

In early October, flyers appeared on campus featuring the face of Lenny Steinberg, the executive director of Oregon Hillel. The posters labeled Steinberg an “enemy of the people” and accused him of supporting “continuation of Zionism and genocide in Palestine,” while calling for the removal of the Jewish student organization from the university. University President John Karl Scholz and several U.S. lawmakers condemned the flyers as “reprehensible” and an effort to intimidate students.

On October 7, approximately 25 masked protesters gathered outside the Hillel house in Eugene. Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Hillel off campus” and “death to the IDF,” and burned an American flag during the demonstration. Steinberg characterized the protest as “harassment and intimidation” and “clearly antisemitic,” stating that the organization is coordinating with law enforcement and university officials to ensure safety.
