Researchers at the University of Oulu in Finland have conducted an observational study involving 2,264 middle-aged adults from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 to examine the relationship between coffee consumption, metabolic markers, and sexual hormones. The study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, identified several correlations. Participants with higher coffee intake tended to exhibit lower levels of total and visceral body fat and greater skeletal muscle mass, despite having similar BMIs. Metabolic findings included lower circulating concentrations of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes risk. Hormonal findings varied by sex. In men, higher coffee consumption was associated with more favorable glucose-insulin profiles, increased levels of bioavailable testosterone, and elevated Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG). In women, associations were more limited, primarily involving higher SHBG levels and lower free androgen levels. Researchers emphasized that these findings indicate correlations rather than direct causation. They noted that further research, including studies on animal models, is required to determine if coffee consumption directly triggers these biological changes and to identify the specific responsible compounds.
