Aili Wang, a 32-year-old microbiology graduate student at the University of Wyoming, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on October 6 while allegedly attempting to flee to China. Wang faces felony aggravated assault and battery charges following the poisoning of a fellow researcher, a Vietnamese national identified as K.T. The victim, who works on patent-pending technology for cancer and neurological disease treatments, began experiencing symptoms such as extreme fatigue, insomnia, and numbness in August. Investigators discovered 63 milligrams of acrylamide, a neurotoxic chemical, in a coffee maker used by the victim. Authorities allege that Wang purchased the acrylamide via eBay and attempted to delete her account to hide the transaction. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Wang manipulating the victim’s research notebooks and rinsing a cup with liquid from her own container. In addition to the poisoning, investigators are looking into whether Wang photographed scientific documents related to cancer research. New details have emerged regarding the victim, identified as Kiệt Trần, a doctoral researcher. His family reports that his condition has severely impacted his ability to function, noting he sleeps only about one hour per night and is unable to stand for long periods, forcing a pause in his teaching duties. Due to his lack of U.S. citizenship, his wife has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with significant medical expenses, which has raised over $38,500. His family has expressed profound distress regarding the potential for permanent neurological damage.
