Unsettled weather and temperature drop in Northern Germany

Northern Germany has experienced a period of unsettled weather characterized by frequent showers and thunderstorms.

In early August, weather forecasts for Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg indicated a high probability of thunderstorms due to a maximum Instability Index of 10. This period brought risks of gusts up to 51 km/h and potential hail, particularly in the southern parts of the state near Lübeck and Hamburg.

By mid-August, the unsettled pattern continued across the region. Lower Saxony, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein, and Hamburg faced changeable conditions with temperatures between 19 and 24 degrees Celsius. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the weather included sunny intervals followed by heavy thunderstorms involving heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds.

By August 19, a significant weather shift occurred as summer temperatures began to decline. The German Weather Service (DWD) reported a transition toward cooler, more unstable conditions marked by increased rainfall, clouds, and thunderstorms. In Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, temperatures have dropped, with some areas described as feeling more like early autumn than August.

This shift coincides with observations of declining mobility in Hamburg during the first half of 2026. Cycling traffic decreased by six percent, potentially due to increased precipitation and extreme temperature fluctuations, while car traffic saw a two percent decline, influenced by weather conditions and higher fuel prices.
