UOKiK investigation into Polish credit scoring

Overview

The Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has initiated an investigation into the Biuro Informacji Kredytowej (BIK) and three banks regarding their credit scoring practices. The inquiry examines whether the method of communicating credit inquiries to banks is necessary for risk assessment or if it unfairly penalizes consumers for comparing loan offers, which could limit market competition.

If violations are confirmed, the involved companies could face fines of up to 10% of their annual turnover. In response to evolving regulations, BIK has noted that it is modifying its scoring model so that credit inquiries not resulting in loan agreements will no longer affect a client's score after 14 days.
