Upadacitinib clinical trial results

Overview

Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of the oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor upadacitinib in treating various skin and hair conditions.

Research published in The Lancet regarding vitiligo indicates that a once-daily pill may help restore skin color. In trials involving 614 participants, approximately 25% of those receiving a 15-mg dose regained at least 75% of lost facial color, compared to 6% in placebo groups. The medication works systemically, which may offer easier administration than topical creams for patients with extensive involvement.

Parallel phase 3 trials for severe alopecia areata involving 1,399 participants also showed positive results. In these studies, between 44.6% and 55.0% of patients receiving 15-mg or 30-mg doses achieved a Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score of 20 or less by week 24, significantly outperforming placebo groups. Participants also reported regrowth in eyebrows and eyelashes. Reported adverse events included acne and upper respiratory tract infections.
