Upper West Side stabbing hate‑crime charges

Entities: Alvin Bragg · Chok Sung · Moshe Yezhak Grunhaus · Raul Morales · Manhattan District Attorney’s Office

Overview

In late July 2026, 51‑year‑old Raul Morales attacked two men on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, shouting “Allahu Akbar” before stabbing a 57‑year‑old Asian man near West 84th Street and a 50‑year‑old Jewish man, Moshe Yezhak Grunhaus, near West 86th Street. Both victims were hospitalized in stable condition.

Morales was arrested within an hour, his apartment was searched and Marxist literature and religious texts were found. He was arraigned on July 24, ordered held without bail, and initially faced two counts of attempted murder, multiple assault counts and hate‑crime enhancements that could carry up to 40 years in prison.

On July 30 a Manhattan grand jury indicted Morales on multiple hate‑crime counts, including two second‑degree attempted‑murder charges, assault and attempted‑assault with hate‑crime enhancements. Prosecutors said Morales used a screwdriver against Grunhaus and continued to chant “Justice for Islam.” He remains detained at Rikers Island and is scheduled for a September 22 arraignment in Manhattan Supreme Court.

During a court appearance Morales made an unexpected outburst, telling the courtroom “I love you, mama,” before being led on a perp walk. City officials – Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Attorney General Letitia James, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul – have condemned the attacks and highlighted rising anti‑Jewish and anti‑Asian hate in New York City.
