Pisa is undertaking various urban mobility and infrastructure improvements. Initial efforts focused on local traffic management near schools, specifically in Largo Concetto Marchesi, where authorities began creating approximately 80 dedicated stalls for bicycles and motorcycles to reduce illegal double-parking and sidewalk obstructions. This project, a collaboration between the Municipality of Pisa, the Province of Pisa, and local educational institutions, aims to mitigate congestion and sidewalk blockages near the ‘Santoni’ and ‘Buonarroti’ school complexes. Similar initiatives have been proposed for Viale Armando Diaz near the Palazzo degli Studi to address congestion near the Corbino and Rizza institutes, seeking to reclaim pedestrian space and improve urban safety. As of September 2026, the installation of these approximately 80 new parking spaces in Largo Concetto Marchesi is nearing completion. The works are expected to be finished by September 14 to ensure the new regulations are operational for the start of the school year on September 15. This experimental measure seeks to reduce disorganized parking that has historically disrupted public transport services during school hours. Following these localized measures, the city secured 8.8 million euros in funding from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security through the ‘Integrated Program of Interventions on Urban and Metropolitan Mobility’. This larger-scale initiative includes the construction of a 6-kilometer cycling path between Tirrenia and Calambrone, a 3-kilometer path for the Veterinary and Agricultural faculties, and a new interceptor parking lot in southern Calambrone to facilitate transfers between cars, buses, and bicycles. The funding also covers upgrades to 40 public transport stops to improve accessibility for people with disabilities and the installation of traffic management technologies, including detection systems at 15 to 20 major traffic light nodes.
