Urban redevelopment and political activity in Torre Annunziata Annunzi
The demolition of the Palazzo Fienga tower in Torre Annunziata has been completed. The tower, described as a “long-standing symbol of Camorra criminal power,” was part of a complex previously confiscated from organized crime. The demolition was executed by the 21st Engineer Regiment of the Italian Army and coordinated by the State Property Agency alongside the National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s office. The site is intended to be repurposed into a public park and multi-functional space for local residents. Naples Prefect Michele Di Bari noted the intervention holds “strong symbolic value” in the effort to restore legality to the territory. As the city undergoes administration by an extraordinary commission, urban planning and political activity have intensified. The municipality has scheduled a public meeting for October 7, 2026, to discuss the Sustainable Integrated Urban Regeneration Program (PRIUS). This initiative seeks to involve citizens and local associations in shaping the city’s strategic development in line with regional funding guidelines. Concurrently, political maneuvering is evident as various groups engage with the commission. The movement Oplonti Futura, led by Lucio D’Avino, has submitted requests regarding road repairs, while Senator Orfeo Mazzella of the Movimento 5 Stelle is reportedly exploring a mayoral candidacy, having previously submitted a 25-chapter dossier to the commission.
