Various urban regeneration and community engagement initiatives have been launched across Sicily. In Mazara del Vallo, the CIVIC center introduced ‘Dialoghi Urbani’, a series of meetings for residents under 35 aimed at transforming civic ideas into local projects through participatory democracy and digital activism. Building on this, the initiative is scheduled to host a meeting on October 10 regarding ‘Patti di collaborazione’ (collaboration pacts). This event aims to instruct citizens and associations on the shared management of common goods, using the Don Milani Center as a practical example of shared administration following new municipal regulations for community-led urban care. Similarly, the ‘AIM - Abitare i margini’ project in Syracuse began hosting workshops in the Mazzarona district to build artistic skills and reintegrate peripheral neighborhoods into the social fabric. Recent developments include the inauguration of a large-scale mural in Selvatelle on via San Lazzaro, created by artists Marco Bichisecchi, Marco Pozzoni, and Fabio Ivan Albizzati to support local community associations. In Messina, the redevelopment of Piazza Quasimodo was completed, transforming a fenced-off area into a social space while preserving 31 pine trees and protecting archaeological remains. To further these efforts, the Sicilian Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity has launched a 200,000 euro call for proposals via the Urban Creativity Fund. This initiative supports street art, muralism, and urban creativity to regenerate degraded and peripheral areas. Assessor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato stated the goal is to make peripheries and visiting routes more attractive, turning urban spaces into “significant tourist and cultural landmarks.” Individual projects may receive up to 20,000 Expanding the scale of regional investment, the Sicilian Region has approved a funding program exceeding 50 million euros to cover costs including materials, scaffolding, support 50 projects across six municipalities within the Ragusa Functional Urban Area (Fua). Participating municipalities include Ragusa, Vittoria, Modica, Scicli, Santa Croce Camerina, and inauguration events. Giarratana.
