The mechanism involves activating the PKG1α protein pathway, which is essential for the relaxation of heart muscles and blood vessels. This is particularly significant for HFpEF, a condition where the heart muscle becomes stiff and struggles to fill with blood between beats, despite maintaining a normal pumping capacity. Findings set to be published in Science Advances emphasize that while the results are promising, they are in the early stages. Researchers note that an individual’s ability to produce urolithin A varies depending on their specific gut microbiome. While the compound has shown a favorable safety profile in previous human studies, clinical trials are required to determine if these results translate to human patients, and experts do not currently recommend dietary changes or supplementation as a medical treatment for heart failure.
