Uruguay is celebrating the 32nd edition of Heritage Day on October 3 and 4, centered on the theme “Indigenous Roots: Past, Present, and Future.” In the department of Florida, festivities include guided tours and cultural activities in Florida, Casupá, and Sarandí Grande. A central exhibition at MAVEA, titled “Capitana y guía. La Virgen de los Treinta y Tres y los Pontífices en Florida,” showcases historical documents, images, and objects related to the Virgin of the Thirty-Three. Notable items include papal bulls regarding patronage by Pope John XXIII, indigenous baptismal records from the Pintado chapel, and gifts from Pope John Paul II. The local program also integrates “youth heritage” through modern expressions like freestyle competitions. In Canelones, the Departmental Intendancy and its Heritage Directorate have organized events in Canelones Capital, Atlántida, Pando, and Las Piedras. The program includes guided tours of historic buildings, artistic performances, photographic exhibitions, thematic talks, and gastronomic fairs. The Museo Taddei will host activities focused on exploring approximately 30,000 years of prehistory. National celebrations include maritime, historical, and archaeological offerings. In Montevideo, the National Navy, the National Port Administration (ANP), and Cennave are hosting events at the Maritime Museum, featuring vessel tours of the ROU 04 ‘Gral. Artigas’ and ROU 10 ‘Huracán,’ diver demonstrations, and concerts. Other accessible sites include the Naval School, the Naval Museum, and lighthouses in Punta del Este and Cabo Polonio. In San José de Mayo, activities include guided tours of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and San Benito de Palermo, highlighting its organ and clock. Additional regional programs involve archaeological cataloging, exhibitions on indigenous roots, funerary heritage tours at the Monumento a Perpetuidad, and public displays of museum objects at the Police Headquarters.
