Participants of the Uruguay Impulsa program, a socio-labor initiative providing temporary employment, have launched a nationwide signature collection drive to extend the program’s duration. Workers from several regions, including Salto and Salto, Paysandú, Lavalleja, Florida, and Fray Bentos, are seeking to increase the program term from four to six months to ensure income through the holiday season. Participants have noted that more than 2,500 signatures have already been submitted in Montevideo, citing Law No. 20.496 as the basis for a potential extension via agreement between the Congress of Intendants and the Presidency. Following this grassroots movement, national representative Graciela Echenique formally requested an extension through a written submission to the Chamber of Representatives. Echenique addressed the Presidency, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and the Congress of Intendants, noting that the program—formerly known as Jornales Solidarios—is vital for family income and supports local governments facing personnel shortages. As of late October, the national government has extended the program through November. In Río Negro, local authorities have opted to use independent resources to fund the program for 171 participants until the end of January. Despite these developments, questions persist regarding the long-term transition of participants into stable, permanent employment once government funding concludes.
