US administration education reform agenda

Overview

The Trump administration is advancing an education agenda focused on expanding school choice, restoring parental rights, and returning educational responsibilities to individual states. A central component of this policy is the Education Freedom Tax Credit, established via the Working Families Tax Cuts Act. This program allows donors to claim federal tax credits of up to $1,700 to support scholarships for private, public, or religious schools. As of late August 2026, more than 30 states have opted into or signaled intent to participate in the program, which is scheduled to begin in early 2027.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has indicated that the administration intends to withhold federal funding from school districts involved in what she described as ‘radical experiments’ regarding gender ideology. The administration is also working to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and race-based preferences in federal programs to prioritize academic merit. In higher education, agreements have been reached with several universities, including Columbia, Brown, Penn, and Northwestern, to end certain DEI practices. Furthermore, executive actions have reestablished the 1776 Commission to promote patriotic education.
