The Trump administration has initiated significant actions to combat healthcare fraud. Vice President JD Vance and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz announced the removal of approximately 750,000 to 760,000 individuals from Affordable Care Act coverage, citing suspected fraud involving ‘phantom patients’ who are allegedly ineligible or non-existent. The administration expects this move to save taxpayers roughly $2.2 billion, though health policy experts have cautioned that a lack of medical claims does not necessarily prove fraud. Expanding on these efforts, Vice President Vance, leading the White House Fraud Task Force, stated that the task force has identified nearly $250 billion in fraud. During the ‘Make America Healthy Again Summit,’ Summit’ held at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., Vance spoke alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Vance criticized congressional Democrats and for failing to address healthcare fraud while simultaneously criticizing costs. He advocated for stricter eligibility criteria for federal programs, specifically arguing it is “basic” and “common sense” that Medicare benefits should be reserved for restricted to American citizens. He expressed concern that insufficient eligibility checks allow billions of dollars to be distributed to individuals, including those in the country illegally.
