US agricultural pesticide regulation debate

In the United States, agricultural stakeholders and labor advocates are engaged in conflicting demands regarding pesticide regulation and safety.

Agricultural groups, including the Minor Crop Farmer Alliance and the Montana Farm Bureau Federation, have submitted formal comments to federal agencies like the EPA and USDA. These groups are advocating for more realistic risk-assessment modeling and the retention of established chemical insecticides, arguing that overly restrictive regulations or limited access to proven tools could jeopardize crop and livestock production.

Conversely, farmworkers and advocates in California are calling for stricter oversight. During legislative hearings, witnesses reported severe health issues—including cancer, asthma, and neurodevelopmental problems in children—linked to chemical exposure. Critics highlighted the continued use of chemicals such as chloropicrin, which is banned in over 40 countries, alleging that current regulatory systems fail to protect agricultural communities from life-threatening substances.
