The administration plans to extend the option to roughly 250 smaller airports as part of FY2027 budget proposals that also call for cutting about 8,400 TSA officer positions. Union leaders representing roughly 47,000 TSA agents have reiterated criticism, arguing the move was made without sufficient congressional, public or employee input and could jeopardize safety. They urge stronger oversight as the rollout proceeds, framing the program as a cost‑saving measure tied to recent shutdown‑related disruptions.

The rollout marks a broader push to privatize aspects of airport security while keeping federal supervision, reflecting ongoing debates over efficiency, resilience and security standards.
