US and EU automotive regulatory shifts

The regulatory landscape for the automotive industry in the United States and the European Union has undergone a significant shift regarding safety and emissions standards.

Initially, the European Union implemented the GSR II regulation for all newly registered N-category commercial vehicles, mandating safety systems such as Intelligent Speed Assistance and Blind Spot Information Systems. In the United States, industry associations were actively requesting clarity from the Environmental Protection Agency regarding heavy-duty nitrogen oxide rules for model year 2027.

However, subsequent policy changes have moved toward easing these requirements. In the United States, the Trump administration introduced the ‘Freedom Means Affordable Cars’ initiative, which reduces pollution control requirements for gasoline-powered vehicles produced between 2022 and 2031 to lower production costs. Similarly, the European Commission eased CO2 emission rules for automobiles following pressure from German manufacturers and political groups, addressing concerns over the feasibility of 2035 zero-emission targets.
