In July 2026 a New York jury ordered former President Donald Trump to pay $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for sexual‑assault and defamation claims; the money was funds were released from a court‑controlled escrow on July 9. The Court declined to hear his appeal of the 2023 verdict on June 29, and the rehearing petition was circulated on July 24. On July 28 Trump filed a motion asking a court to return the $5.6 million to a supervised account, alleging claiming Carroll had moved the funds to a personal investment account – a claim Carroll’s counsel disputes. The same day the Department of Justice, on Trump’s behalf, submitted a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the $83.3 million defamation judgment from the 2024 trial. The petition argues that Trump’s 2019 the statements at issue were official acts made while Trump was president and therefore are protected by the 2024 presidential‑immunity decision and the Westfall Act, and seeks seeking to substitute the United States as the defendant. A separate supporting petition was filed by The Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the DOJ.
