U.S. Army leadership crisis deepens with Secretary's exit

Overview

The U.S. Army leadership crisis has intensified following the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, effective September 1, 2026. Driscoll’s departure follows months of friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding strategic direction, resource management, and the removal of senior officers. Driscoll, an Iraq War veteran and close associate of Vice President JD Vance, was known as ‘Trump’s man for drones’ due to his advocacy for rapid military modernization. He reportedly met with President Trump to express concerns that Hegseth’s leadership is “damaging the Army’s readiness and modernization efforts” and shrinking the pool of future senior leaders.

Hegseth has initiated an unprecedented purge, firing or blocking the promotions of more than 80 generals and admirals—approximately 10% of the military’s top leadership. Hegseth has defended these actions as a way to instill a “warrior ethos” and eliminate “woke” policies and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. These removals have reportedly disproportionately targeted Black, Latino, and female officers.

Beyond personnel changes, Hegseth has replaced three top judge advocates general (JAG) officers and implemented new media policies that limit news media access to the Pentagon. Additionally, administration of polygraph tests to 50 high-ranking officers and staff has occurred during investigations into alleged leaks.

The instability has deepened with the additional departure of Army Chief of Staff Randy A. George. Following Driscoll’s exit, President Trump appointed Adam Telle, formerly the Army's deputy secretary for civil works, as the acting Secretary of the Army. Political opposition continues to mount, with Senator Thom Tillis accusing Hegseth of “inept management.”
